Ant Supercolonies

These tiny creatures are quite fascinating and one of them form vast supercolonies that stretch over large distances. An example is the Argentine ant which possesses a supercolony in Southern Europe that stretches for about 6,000 kilometers (approximately 3,700 miles) along the Mediterranean coast.

This means that this single organism consists of millions of nests and billions of ants. Such ants identify each other by smell, while joining efforts towards gathering food, defending their territory and raising their broods together. The coordination and efficiency displayed by these supercolonies illustrate how insects have an amazing social organization and cooperation amongst themselves.
